Ctrl + Alt + Reboot

There was a version of me — call her v1.0 — who lived alone, coded until 2 a.m., and considered a few soup dumplings a legitimate dinner. She answered to no one, deployed to production on a whim, and kept all her houseplants alive.

Then life shipped a major update.

Now I'm running v2.0: a wife, a brand-new mom, and the proud operator of a very opinionated dog who believes 6 a.m. is the ideal time to negotiate his walking schedule. Somewhere in that update, I also rebooted my business, The Creative Byte — because apparently I enjoy running processes in parallel. Here's the funny part nobody warns you about: going back to corporate America after maternity leave is its own kind of reboot. You return to your computer, your badge still works (small miracle), and your inbox has quietly achieved sentience. Everyone asks how the baby is — sweetly, sincerely — while you relearn what all your own acronyms mean. I'm a Cloud & Security Architect by day, which means I keep big systems from falling over. Turns out babies and production environments have a lot in common: both are unpredictable, both need constant monitoring, and both will absolutely test your incident-response skills at 3 a.m.

What surprised me most is that motherhood made me a better engineer — and a better founder. When your free time shrinks, you get ruthless about what matters. No more gold-plating, no more “I'll just tinker for four hours.” I build faster, cleaner, and with a lot more empathy for busy people who don't have time to wrestle with technology. (Hi, small business owners. I see you.)

So how does it all fit together? Honestly, imperfectly. But here's my actual system, quirks included:

• Timebox everything. The dog walk is non-negotiable, so it anchors my morning. Fresh air first, code second.

• Batch the chaos. I answer messages in windows, not all day. My brain likes fewer context switches — so does yours.

• Done beats perfect. A launched website helps a business today. A “perfect” one helps no one from my drafts folder.

The through-line across all of it — v1.0, v2.0, corporate me, founder me — is that I love building things that make life easier for other people. The Creative Byte is just me pointing that same energy at the small businesses I adore, one modern technical tool at a time.

Now if you'll excuse me, someone with four legs is staring at his leash like it owes him money.
